ITIL 4 Guiding Principles Explained
The seven guiding principles are universal and enduring recommendations that apply to everything an organization does — from a single task to a full transformation.
The Seven Principles
| # | Principle | Core Idea |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Focus on value | Everything links to value for stakeholders |
| 2 | Start where you are | Assess the current state before building new |
| 3 | Progress iteratively with feedback | Small steps, regular course correction |
| 4 | Collaborate and promote visibility | Work across boundaries, make work visible |
| 5 | Think and work holistically | Consider the whole system, not parts in isolation |
| 6 | Keep it simple and practical | Eliminate unnecessary steps and complexity |
| 7 | Optimize and automate | Optimize the process before automating it |
Applying the Principles
- They interact: The principles depend on and inform each other
- They are universal: Apply to every activity, not just major projects
- They are recommendations: Not mandatory rules — adapt to context
- Value is co-created: The consumer's perception defines value
Exam Tips
- Know the exact name of each principle
- Understand what each principle looks like in practice
- Recognize which principle applies to a given scenario
- Remember: optimize BEFORE automate
